A whole-home surge protector installed at the electrical panel protects every circuit and device in the building simultaneously — protection that individual power strip surge protectors cannot replicate. Power strip protectors address surges at the outlet level. They do not address surges entering through the service entrance from the utility grid — voltage spikes caused by lightning, utility switching events, and transient spikes generated by large motor loads like HVAC compressors cycling on and off. Panel-level protection catches these surges before they reach any circuit in the home. Our licensed electricians install Type 1 and Type 2 surge protective devices at the panel level, sized correctly for the service.
Surge Protector Installation — Everything You Need to Know
From whole-home panel-level protection to joule ratings and what surges actually damage — here’s what homeowners need to know about surge protector installation before requesting service.
How Panel-Level Protection Works
A whole-home surge protective device (SPD) is installed in or adjacent to the main electrical panel. It monitors the voltage on each service conductor and, when a transient voltage spike exceeds the SPD’s clamping threshold, diverts the excess energy to ground before it can travel down the branch circuits to connected devices. The device sacrifices itself gradually through repeated surge events — most quality SPDs include an indicator light or audible alarm that signals when the device has reached end of protection life and needs replacement.
Why Power Strips Are Not Enough
Power strip surge protectors protect only the specific devices plugged into them from surges at the outlet level. They do not protect appliances plugged directly into wall outlets, hardwired appliances like refrigerators, HVAC systems, and dishwashers, or the sensitive electronics inside smart home devices, EV chargers, and LED control systems. A surge entering through the service entrance distributes across every circuit simultaneously — only panel-level protection intercepts it before it reaches any device.
SPD Types and Placement
Type 1 SPDs install on the line side of the main disconnect. Type 2 install inside the panel.
- Type 1 installed before disconnect
- Type 2 installs inside the panel
- Both types can be combined
- End-of-life indicator
What the Installation Involves
Panel-level SPD installation requires a main breaker shutdown to make the connection. We select the appropriately rated SPD for the service size, install it per NEC requirements, test the indicator function, and confirm the panel is correctly restored. Most installations complete in under two hours.
- Correct SPD rating selected
- NEC-compliant installation method
- Panel restored and tested
