Outdoor lighting installation covers any line-voltage fixture mounted on the exterior of a building or on a post, pillar, or ground stake connected to household current. This includes security floodlights, motion-sensor fixtures, entry and porch lights, post lights along driveways, step and pathway lighting, and decorative architectural fixtures. All outdoor electrical work must use weatherproofed boxes and covers, outdoor-rated fixtures, and GFCI-protected circuits. Our licensed electricians handle all aspects of outdoor lighting, from running new circuits to mounting and testing the final fixture.
Outdoor Lighting Installation — Everything You Need to Know
From GFCI requirements to weatherproof fixtures and placement — here’s what homeowners need to know about outdoor lighting before requesting service.
What Outdoor Lighting Covers
Outdoor lighting installation covers porch and entry lights connected to existing or new switching, security floodlights and motion-sensor fixtures at eaves and corners, driveway post lights requiring new circuit runs, step and deck lighting hardwired to GFCI-protected circuits, and any exterior fixture requiring a new weatherproof junction box and outdoor-rated wiring. For fixtures without an existing outdoor circuit nearby, we run new wiring from the panel using the most direct code-compliant path.
Code Requirements for Outdoor Work
All outdoor outlets and lighting circuits require GFCI protection per NEC. California code requires weatherproof in-use covers on all outdoor outlets, and any box used outdoors must be rated for wet or damp location as appropriate for its exposure. Outdoor fixtures must themselves be rated for wet or damp location — standard indoor fixtures are not appropriate for any exterior mounting. We verify fixture ratings and box ratings before any outdoor installation.
Outdoor Motion Controls
Motion sensor and smart outdoor lighting controls require correct wiring and neutral connections at the switch location.
- Motion sensors require neutral at switch
- Smart dimmers require neutral wire
- GFCI on all outdoor circuits
- Weatherproof required
Built to Withstand the Elements
Outdoor electrical work fails prematurely when the wrong materials are used. We use wet-location rated boxes, direct-burial cable where required, and sealed connectors for all outdoor connections. After installation, every circuit is tested and every fixture confirmed operational before we sign off the job.
- Wet-location rated boxes used
- Direct-burial cable where required
- All connections sealed for moisture
- Fixtures tested at completion
