Hardwired smoke detectors are the California code standard for residential fire detection — all units interconnected so that when one detects smoke, all detectors in the home sound simultaneously. This means a fire starting in the basement alerts occupants in every bedroom, including those with the door closed. Standalone battery-powered detectors do not provide this interconnection. California code also requires carbon monoxide detectors in homes with attached garages or fuel-burning appliances. Our licensed electricians install hardwired interconnected units, replace outdated detectors, and upgrade single-station battery units to hardwired systems.
Smoke Detector Installation — Everything You Need to Know
From interconnected hardwired units to code placement requirements and battery backup — here’s what homeowners need to know about smoke detector installation before requesting service.
What the Installation Covers
Smoke detector installation covers new hardwired unit installation in homes without existing hardwired systems, replacement of units that have reached end of service life, addition of detectors to comply with current California placement requirements, and upgrade from standalone battery units to hardwired interconnected systems. California requires smoke detectors in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area, on every level of the dwelling, and in the basement. CO detectors are required on every level and outside each sleeping area in homes with garages or fuel-burning appliances.
When Detectors Must Be Replaced
Smoke detectors have a rated service life of ten years from the manufacture date printed on the back of the unit. After ten years, the detection element degrades and the unit may no longer respond reliably to smoke. Detectors that chirp despite having fresh batteries, units that trigger false alarms repeatedly, and any unit over ten years old should be replaced. Hardwired units with battery backup should be tested monthly and the backup battery replaced annually.
California Placement Rules
California code specifies detector placement by room type and building level.
- Required in every sleeping room
- Required outside each sleeping area
- Required on every level of dwelling
- CO detector near garage
Hardwired vs. Battery Units
Hardwired interconnected detectors with battery backup are the California code standard and most reliable option. The hardwired connection ensures power even when battery backup is depleted, the interconnection ensures all units alarm when one triggers, and the battery backup ensures function during a power outage — exactly when occupants are most likely to be asleep and least aware of danger.
