A Level 2 home EV charger transforms the daily experience of electric vehicle ownership. Instead of arriving home with a partial charge and calculating tomorrow’s range, you plug in and wake up to a full battery every morning. Level 2 charging delivers 20 to 30 miles of range per hour — enough to fully charge most EVs overnight. The installation requires a dedicated 240-volt circuit from your electrical panel to the charging location, a properly mounted EVSE unit, and in most jurisdictions a permit and inspection. Our licensed electricians handle the complete process in a single project: panel assessment, dedicated circuit, charger mounting, permit filing, and utility coordination.

EV Charger Installation — Everything You Need to Know

From Level 1 vs. Level 2 chargers to panel capacity and permit requirements — here’s what homeowners need to know about EV charger installation before requesting service.

17

The Complete Installation Process

Every installation begins with a panel assessment — confirming available capacity for a new 50-amp circuit. A 200-amp panel with spare breaker slots typically accommodates a Level 2 circuit without additional panel work. A 100-amp panel or a heavily loaded 200-amp panel may require an upgrade first. Once capacity is confirmed, we run 6-gauge copper wire from the panel to the charging location, install the 240V outlet or hardwired connection, mount and wire the EVSE unit, file the permit, and schedule the inspection.

14

Plug-In vs. Hardwired Installation

A plug-in EVSE connects to a NEMA 14-50 outlet — offering flexibility to take the charger if you move and use the outlet for other 240V loads. A hardwired unit connects directly to the circuit, is slightly more efficient, eliminates the plug as a failure point, and is generally preferred for permanent residential installations. Tesla Wall Connectors and ChargePoint Home Flex deliver full rated amperage without the marginal losses introduced by a plug connection. We install both types and advise on which fits your vehicle, garage, and plans.

Permits and Utility Rebates

EV charger permits are required in virtually every California and New Jersey jurisdiction.

  • Permit filed by our office before work
  • Inspection scheduled by our team
  • SCE, PG&E, LADWP rebates available
  • Documentation for rebates

Panel and Charger Combined

When a panel upgrade is required before the charger can be installed, we handle both as a single combined project — filing permits for both, coordinating the utility service upgrade, and completing panel and charger installation in a single project sequence. The combined cost is less than pricing each separately.

  • Panel upgrade and charger combined
  • Single permit covers both items
  • Utility coordination together
  • Rebate documentation provided
  • Fixed quote for full scope
