GFCI outlets are among the most important safety devices in a modern electrical system. They detect current leaking to ground through an unintended path — including through a person — and cut power in under 1/40th of a second, fast enough to prevent electrocution. California and New Jersey codes require GFCI protection in every bathroom, kitchen within six feet of any sink, garage, outdoor location, unfinished basement, and near pools or hot tubs. Homes built before these code requirements were adopted may not have GFCI protection in all required locations. Our licensed electricians install GFCI outlets to current code using the correct device type and installation method for each application.
GFCI Outlet Installation — Everything You Need to Know
From code requirements and locations to how GFCI protection works — here’s what homeowners need to know about GFCI outlet installation before requesting service.
Where GFCI Protection Is Required
California code requires GFCI protection in every bathroom outlet regardless of distance from the sink, all kitchen outlets within six feet of any sink, all garage outlets, all outdoor outlets, unfinished basements and crawl spaces, and locations near pools, hot tubs, and fountains. GFCI protection can be provided by an individual GFCI receptacle at each required location, a GFCI circuit breaker protecting all outlets on a circuit from the panel, or a GFCI outlet at the first outlet on a circuit with standard outlets protected through the LOAD terminals downstream.
How GFCI Protection Works
A GFCI outlet monitors the current balance between the hot and neutral conductors. Under normal conditions they are equal. When a ground fault occurs — current finding an unintended path such as through a person — the outgoing and returning currents become unequal. The GFCI detects this difference at four to six milliamps and opens the circuit within milliseconds. Ten milliamps causes muscular paralysis that prevents releasing a live conductor; 100 to 300 milliamps causes cardiac fibrillation.
Monthly Testing Requirement
GFCI outlets should be tested monthly using the built-in TEST and RESET buttons.
- Press TEST to verify de-energization
- Press RESET to restore power
- Failed test means replacement needed
- Lifespan 10-15 years
Correct LOAD Terminal Wiring
A common wiring error is connecting downstream outlets to the LINE terminals instead of the LOAD terminals. Outlets wired to LINE do not receive GFCI protection — they behave as if the GFCI is not present. We verify correct terminal connection for every outlet on the circuit, not just the GFCI device itself.
- LOAD terminals verified first
- LINE side does not protect
- Every outlet on circuit tested
- Cover plates after confirmation
- Fixed quote before work begins
