When was Electricity First Installed in Homes?

The transition of electricity into residential spaces was a gradual process that began in the late 19th century. While Benjamin Franklin proved the electrical nature of lightning in 1752, practical home use did not emerge for over 100 years.

Key milestones in the history of home electrification include:

  • 1882: Thomas Edison launched the Pearl Street Station in New York City, which was the first central power plant to distribute electricity to paying customers. During this same year, he also delivered electricity to homes in New Jersey.
  • Late 1880s and 1890s: Electricity first began appearing in the homes of wealthy early adopters. These early installations were primitive, often using knob-and-tube wiring with bare-bulb fixtures and very few outlets.
  • 1893: The World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago showcased Alternating Current (AC), proving to the public that electricity could be safely and spectacularly scaled for widespread household use.

Because these early systems were often installed by unskilled laborers and lacked uniformity, the first National Electrical Code was published in 1897 to establish safety standards.

Today, we continue this legacy of safety by providing licensed & insured services. Whether you need a panel upgrade, whole home rewiring, or permit-ready installations, we bring local expertise to ensure your modern electrical system meets the highest current safety standards.
